  • Disney English in Beijing >

About the city: Located in northern China, this is the capital of the People’s Republic of China. The second largest city in China after Shanghai. Beijing is the country’s cultural, educational and political center. Home to seven – yes, seven – UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Climate: Influenced by monsoons, the climate here is rather dry humid continental climate. Summers here are hot and humid, while winters are cold, windy and dry. During the springtime, occasionally sand storms will occur from the Gobi Desert. The falls here are crisp, short and see very little rainfall.

Housing: By far the expat’s largest expense. With prices steadily increasing, a good rule of thumb is the closer you are to the center of it all, the more you will pay. 1 bedroom/studio outside of the city center will be around 3,500 rmb. A 1 bedroom inside the city center will cost upwards of 5,500. Be sure to keep in mind size – this will also vary by price and location, as well as extras such as utilities and internet. Interested in sharing? A 3 bedroom outside the city center will begin at roughly 6,800 rmb, while a 3 bedroom inside the city center begins around 14,500. As you can see, sharing will stretch your money further while giving you more space to move around.

Food: Food is relatively cheap here and Chinese food is going to be cheaper than foreign, imported equivalents. A meal in a Chinese restaurant on average (with more food) will be about 30 rmb compared to a combo meal from McDonald’s at 27 rmb. Of course, a cornucopia of 5 star restaurants exist to burn a hole in your pocket, if that’s what you want. New in town and feeling adventurous? Try these – Beijing Roast Duck (also called Peking Duck), Tudou Si (shredded potato), Mongolian Hot Pot

Transportation: One way tickets on local transportation (bus, metro) are 2 rmb, monthly passes are 100 rmb. Taxis start at 13 rmb.

  • Disney English in Guangzhou >

Climate: Guangzhou has a humid, subtropical climate. Summers are characterized as wet with high humidity and extreme heat. Because of the climate, Guangzhou is also subjected to long monsoon seasons lasting from April through September. Luckily, winters here are generally dry and mild. Expect weather fluctuations for the spring and fall while the seasons transition.

Housing: 1 bedroom in the city center is around 3,100+. A 1 bedroom outside the center will run you about 1,600+. For 3 bedrooms in the city center, roughly 6,600+ and outside the city center, 3,000+.

Food: A meal in an inexpensive Chinese restaurant will only cost you around 15 rmb. Try this: White Cut Chicken, Rice Rolls, Yum Cha.

Transportation: Local transportation fare is 2.50 rmb for a 1 way ticket. Taxi fares start at 10 rmb.
